Interview with Rj Devaki

Rj Devaki is an RJ at Red FM, Ahmedabad and she is also a programming head of all three Red FM stations in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot. Our team member Palash Bhatt exclusively took her interview! We got to know many secrets of her in this interview! Have a look at some of the questions we asked to Rj Devaki.

What is difference between Devaki inside and outside the radio station?

There is no difference. When you are going to speak on radio for 365 days, you cannot maintain that difference between inside and outside radio station. I am on Radio since last 10 years. So probably I have been on air like 3000 times. And one can’t fake it 3000 times.

I am not that RJ who doesn’t have complaints, who is sweet and happy all the time on radio. I can’t be sweet on radio all the time. That’s why it is more believable for someone that this is what I am, whether on air or not.

I am also doing management. Currently I am managing cluster of Red FM. I am working as a programming head of all three Red FM stations, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot. Radio is a vent for me. I can’t be without being on radio.

Define yourself.

Rj Devaki Red FM

I am irreverent, aggressive, very intense, hyper, very high on energy and talkative. A lot of people don’t know that I am very shy. I am an introvert person. So unless and until I have to talk professionally, I generally don’t talk. If I meet people for very first time, it’s difficult for me to gel. I am not a social person. I don’t like meeting with lots of people. I don’t like to attend weddings or meeting thousands of people. But, if my job requires it, I will do it. Like if I have to host a show of thousands of people for my radio, I will do it. If you will leave me alone on Navratri without my set of friends, I’ll be scared to death!

I love music. I love dancing. I love life. I love Goa, Miami. I love beaches! Very optimistic about my life! I take life as strive. If anybody tells me if there is anything you want to change about your life, believe me there is not a single thing I want to change! I wish to live through all my bad experience and want to learn from it again. I have never taken my failure as a dropper; I’ve always taken it as a chance to learn something.

Who is the most important person of your life?

My parents. They are very close to me, and I can’t imagine my life without them.

Which was the turning point of your life?

Being an RJ was the turning point of my life. Actually, I wanted to be an actor. I was very bright student. I could have done MBA. My relatives were imagining that I’ll do my MBA from IIM and then I’ll become CEO of some place. That’s what they have dreamt for me. I was very clear because my parents are from theater background. We also run a theater company. So, I wanted to become an actor. I have done my graduation in Literature with English. Than I’ve decided that I’ll go to National School of Drama, Delhi. But due to some reasons, I decided to cancel going to NSD, and I started acting in theatre in Mumbai. But again I had to come Ahmedabad leaving acting, due to some family reasons. When I came back to Ahmedabad, one of my friends was participating for the first RJ Hunt of the city. So, I went with him. And as he was not having change, he took two forms. He asks me to fill up the form, and I said no. I don’t have to do Radio. I was not that optimist and funny person at that time how people perceive me today. But somehow, I filled up the form and even won the RJ Hunt! And I took job in radio. The more I spent time with Radio, the more I realized that I started knowing myself better! Everyday somebody wants your opinion about anything that happens under the sun. Why my opinion? Suddenly I am such an important person. Your opinion is important, because your opinion is different than the rest of the world. It’s making people think in the different direction. That’s why becoming an RJ ended up being a turning point of my life because I just got to know myself very differently. I wanted to become an actress. I wanted to do modeling. But suddenly, I am known for my brain not the beauty.

Which one is the happiest moment of your life?

Very first time my father came to me and said that now I am recognized by your name. That’s one of the happiest moments of my life. Because, when your family recognize you is far better than rest of the world recognize you.

There is another happy moment I would love to share. I went to my school on the foundation day of my school two years back. They do a program called Baalrathi on their birthday every year. In which all teachers worship students as they believe that there is a god in every student. All students get to be horses and Baalrathi. When I was in school, I could never be a Baalrathi because I was very tall. So I had to be a horse. I was invited as a chief guest two years back for a Baalrathi. When I went for Baalrathi, I met with a parent. They showed me a very little kid, she had become a horse in Baalrathi too. Mother said- she is also Devaki. And she added, when I was pregnant, we used to listen you on Radio. And I used to love you. And you were saying that to teach your child English, it’s not necessary to put them in English Medium School. It’s essential for them to learn Gujarati- their mother tongue. So they named their child Devaki after me and put her in the same school as me. This one was a very overwhelming and happy moment.

Do you have regression of any of your mistakes?

There is one time when I did an interview with Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Sauri live on radio. Generally we play recorded interview on radio, but at that time my producer asked me to take it live. I was skeptical about taking them live. But anyhow, I and my co-host took their interview live. And they ended up saying that the jock who is doing interview with me is playing a strip poker with me! And we shoplift! It was such an embarrassing moment for us! Our listeners were shocked. And we couldn’t do anything about it. So I felt it was irresponsible of me. Because, even if my producer asked me to do so, I should have put my foot down! I have regression of this mistake as generally I don’t do this kind of mistake.

Also every time I go on air without preparing, I regret it. Because I know everyone for whom I talk on radio is spending very precious minute of his life listening to me and he is not gonna get that time back. If you are getting this much minutes of this much people, and if you don’t respect enough to prepare for it and talk on radio that is not fair.

Can you tell us about the funniest incident of your life?

I have lot of funny incidents with bollywood stars.

I remember Ranbir Kapoor and I were doing an interview once. We offered him a breakfast. And then, while we were talking, I try to pick up a chip from his plate. He fought with me for ten minutes saying why you picked up a chip. And I said why I can’t take it. We were fighting like kids. It was a funny incident.

Second funny incident is with Salmaan Khan. I was doing an interview with him when I was about to be launched on Red FM in September 2010. Dabangg was releasing at that time. I ask Salmaan to tell people that they should come and watch Dabangg. So he said no. I don’t want to tell people to watch my movie. They will come if they want to and they won’t if they don’t want to. You know Salmaan’s attitude.

Raavan was also releasing at that time. Abhishek and Aishwarya starring. So I said- To thik hai, bol do ki log Raavan dekhne aae! (Then ask audience to go for Raavan.). I just pumped in! I was so scared as he heard my line. He looked at me for two seconds. And the entire studio was staring at me with silence. And then he burst in to the laughter so badly that he fell off the chair. And he was laughing under the table! And I was like oh my god! Both of us were laughing our hearts out. That’s one of the funniest incidents.

What are your passions rather than RJing?

Theater is my passion. I love music. I love singing. I love dancing. I love watching movies. I can watch three movies back to back in movie hall if you keep giving me popcorn. I love listening to audio books.

How to maintain relationships?

I don’t know. I am still learning. Because on radio it’s a one way relationship. When I talk, you don’t talk and when you talk I don’t talk. So I think, our listeners are happy with my relationship with them on radio. Because they can switch me off whenever they want. Where as in personal life, you can’t do this. And when we keep relations on radio, we don’t have fear of relationship.

Now, it’s very difficult for me to start a new relationship. Because in radio I talk like I know you and you know me. I don’t keep grudges. I believe in forgiveness and forgetness.

When we shouldn’t involve attitude and self respect?

When it’s your loved once; when someone is in trouble; when someone is on a deathbed. You shouldn’t involve attitude. Whenever somebody needs me, I don’t engage attitude. Because, I remember time when I was in trouble and how people were reacting.

Everyone has a dream world. When I wake up, I want things like this. What’s your dream world?

I want to wake up on a beach house. Only one thing I regret being in Ahmedabad is a sea. I love sea. I think I don’t want to have a day when I am tired. I want to wake up in a day in which I feel that 24 hours are less.

  1. What a stupid article! You don’t even know the difference between embracing & embarrassing; and regret and regression! Phew! God save India!
