5 On the Go Recipes for Hostelites

Bachelor life, one of the most thrilling experiences of anyone. In this thrilling journey, I’d advice every bachelor to experience hostel life. Because it is the best time in your young life.

Living with strangers who turn into your best friends in no time. Living with them, eating with them in the mess, eating at the stalls just outside the campus.

Out of many pros, hostel life has its own con– “food”. You will miss “Maa ke haath ka khana”  like anything.

So here is something useful for those who struggle with one the little ‘con’ of hostel life.

Note: All ingredients are mentioned in below recipes are for 1 serving.

1. Garlic Potato Chat

Garlic Potato Chat - 10 On the Go Recipes for Hostelites

Total time: 10 minutes


  • 2-3 Medium size potatoes
  • 2 chopped green chilies
  • 1 small cup chopped green garlic/garlic paste
  • 1 cup curd
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp masala peanuts
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tsp chat masala
  • 2 tsp cumin powder


  1. Half Boil potatoes and cut into bite size pieces. Fry it in pan.
  2. Take another pan. Combine the oil and green chilies plus green garlic for a while.
  3. Cover the container and cook it for 5 minutes at slow flame. Put fried potatoes in it.
  4. Add chili powder, salt and cumin powder in curd and mix it. You can add tomato sauce for rich taste.
  5. Now add fried potatoes mixture in curd, garnish it with chat masala and decorate it with masala peanuts.

2. Cheese Jam Sandwich

Total time: 10 minutes


  • 4 slices white sandwich bread
  • 1/3 cup cream cheese
  • ¼ cup mix fruit jam
  • 2 tbsp salted butter


  1. Place the bread slices. Equally divide and spread the cream cheese on 2 of the bread slices. Equally divide and spread the jam on the remaining 2 bread slices. Close the sandwiches so that each sandwich has cream cheese and jam.
  2. You can eat as it is or cook in frying pan until both sides are golden brown.

Yummy delicious sandwiches are ready to go in your tummy!!

3. Aloo Frankie

Total Time: 10 minutes


  • Left over rotis
  • 1 ½ tbsp. oil or butter
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 ½ cup boiled, peeled and mashed potatoes
  • ¾ tspchilli powder
  • 1 tspgaram masala
  • ½ tsp chat masala(optional)
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped coriander
  • Salt to taste
  • Tomato sauce for serving


  1. Heat the oil/butter in a pan, add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds.
  2. Add the potatoes, chilli powder, garam masala, chaat masala, coriander and salt, mix well and sauté on a medium flame for another minute. Keep aside.
  3. Place a roti on the tava and cook on a medium flame using ½ tsp butter till both sides turn light brown in color.
  4. Now add ¼ cup of onions, potato mixture, sprinkle 1½ tsp of masala and ½ tsp of chaat masala evenly over it and roll it up tightly.
  5. Fold the edges at one end and wrap in an aluminum foil/ tissue paper and serve immediately with tomato sauce.
  6. You can do more variations like cheese frankie, Paneer frankie etc.

4. Yogurt Coriander Rice

Total Time: 5 minutes


  • Left over rice
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tspudad dal
  • 1 tspchilli powder
  • Salt to taste


  1. Place boiled rice in a bowl. Add yogurt and salt, mix it well.
  2. Add ghee in a pan, add mustard seeds and sauté, then add udaddaal and chilli powder, mix well.
  3. Place this fried mixture in rice bowl.
  4. Garnish with coriander and serve hot.

5. Cheese Corn Biscuit Canapes

Total Time: 5 minutes


  • Monaco biscuits
  • Grated cheese
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp mint chutney
  • 1 half cup corns
  • 1 finely chopped onion and tomato
  • 1 tspchilli powder
  • 1 tspchaat masala
  • Sev and tomato sauce to garnish


  1. Place Monaco biscuit in serving plate.
  2. Spread butter and mint chutney at bottom.
  3. Add corns, onion and tomato dices.
  4. Sprinkle chilli powder and chaat masala.
  5. Garnish with cheese, sev and tomato sauce.
