The Boom and the Downs of the 2nd year
Second year meant the reunion or assembly of all the Information Technology students who were bifurcated in the 1st semester. It meant that we again have to adjust to new circumstances and new people. The first day as usual was like a new season but in the same old garden. We five (I, Hemangi, Pari, Khushi and Naina) went and occupied the last two benches. We were actually tired of sitting on the first two benches in the first year. Suddenly Dia comes and joined us. Initially everyone felt awkward to talk and gel with her because somewhere down the line everyone else except me had lost the connection with her. We (Incredible five) gelled so well that we were not ready to let her in our space. Initially Dia sat with Tamana and Anchal. She was not at all comfortable sitting with the two as they were the most irritable creatures born in this world. Later on she asked me if she could sit with Naina and Pari. I asked the two and they agreed. So we now became six. New lecturers dropped in. They were busy conducting the lectures and stuff and we were busy in our lives. We chose a new place for hanging out during the breaks. But Govind, Manav and the other group of those guys (who I hated a lot) sat on the other side. We could see them and they could easily see us. The lecturers were funny and the lectures were boring. But the real boom was the entrance of our H.O.D. Professor Nita as one of our lecturers. She was a fat, short build. She had a powerful voice and walked like the King of the jungle. Students were afraid of her. She was firm to strict rules and regulations. She liked students who kept good academic record and moved like a tail behind her. Here I got my very first target. It was to impress her and become the apple of her eye. She walked in for her first lecture. We sat still. We paid heed to her voice. A boy was making some kind of comment. She caught him and took his class. Her voice had that commanding power. She made things clear to the class. She wanted no absenteeism, irregularity or any distractions in her class. If she catches any one red handed she would throw that person out of the class. That was definitely a shaky movement. After her class got over, we decided to stick to our old plan. We moved to the 1st and 2nd benches respectively (that was a safe plan). We didn’t live any fear in other lectures but the lecture of Professor Nita was to be watched for. As the initial days progressed, we noticed a change in Naina. She suddenly was becoming a sincere girl (she was never inclined towards her study in the initial semesters). That fact wasn’t bothering us, we were happy for the change. But what actually bothered us was her attitude towards us. She was now a totally different person. She used to complete all the notes and assignments before time and lie to us that she had not yet done. If we asked her about some study material then she used to make an excuse that the stuff is with Hetal (her friend in C.E.). She used to hide and complete her work. She started bunking our hangout sessions that we used to enjoy during breaks. Things were getting above our head because a very integral member was lying to us. We didn’t expect such behavior from her and what was more annoying was that Pari was supporting her friend. She told that there should be no problem if she wants to study and do her work sincerely. She refused to come in terms with our thoughts. We told her that we would be extremely happy if Naina does well in her studies but why is she lying? Why does she refuse to share her notes or assignments with us and why is she becoming so mean to us? We definitely are her well wishers and would remain so but we disagreed with the ways that she adopted to chose. That left Pari enraged. She thought that we were jealous of her (Naina). That left us in ambiguity whether we were a strong unit or not. The incident also left us in two divided groups. In one group it was Naina and Pari. The other group comprised of Dia, Khushi, Hemangi and I. I think that was the first time we had experienced an internal division within the group.
