Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Sunil Thapa, Darshan Kumar
Mary Kom is a biopic based upon the life of Indian boxer Mary kom and her struggle. The best thing about Mary Kom is the cast, Priyanka Chopra may not look like the real Mary Kom but she certainly has the charm and conviction of Mary Kom. She pulls the film on her shoulders alone but it would not have been complete without the superb supporting cast which consist of Darshan Kumar as Onlar and Sunil Thapa as Mary’s coach.
First half of the film is about Mary’s growing up years, her fight to get in the ring with herself and her family and how she becomes one of the most important boxers of India. Dialogues of the film do neither have that fire nor does they make any such impact but just because of Priyanka Chopra you may give it a pass.
Second half of the movie is the best thing about Mary Kom, here the script and screenplay are tight plus the training sequence is also superbly shot. There is a scene where Mary is offered a government job of being a Hawaldar which is hilarious and also sad. But Mary remains firm and the movie totally deserves all the accolades it has been getting. The only thing which irritated me most was the national anthem at the end of the movie and telling the audience to stand up, everyone should know this. You shouldn’t really tell one to stand up, you have to make a person feel the power of our national anthem to make them stand up and feel proud.
Undoubtedly, Mary Kom is no Bhag Milkha Bhag. But it certainly packs a punch and that too a solid one. I am going with 3.5 Bits out of 5 for Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom. Go and watch Priyanka playing Mary Kom which might give her a national award.
