New Delhi: India Today’s Best City Awards of year 2014 were distributed on 21st November in the city. Chennai has emerged as the best city (overall) this year whereas Coimbatore is titled with best emerging city (overall) in India Today’s awards. Kolkata was awarded the best city in category crime rate and safety, while Surat came second in the same category. In the education category, Chennai again emerged as the best city, while Thane won the award in the environment category. India Today Group has conducted the survey of cities last year.
Speaking at the awards, Aroon Purie (Editor in Chief, India Today) said, “When we commissioned the survey, smart cities were still a gleam in the eyes of most urban planners.” He expressed pleasure over the fact that urbanisation was now the top agenda of this government.
The second edition of India Today’s Best Cities of India Report studied 30 capital and metro cities and 20 emerging cities on 12 parameters – overall, economy, housing, transport, public services, healthcare, education, crime and safety, entertainment, environment, investment and cleanliness.
