A recent image has been making rounds in the social media about an export company that rejected a candidate because of his religion. The image was shared by Zeshan Ali Khan on Facebook who received an email from the HR department of Hare Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd that his application is rejected because they don’t hire Muslim candidates.
The email is not fake but the story is different than what is being told. It is not a case of discrimination by the business but one employee, a fresher still in training, making a thoughtless statement in an email.
In a statement given by Savjibhai Dholakia (Director, Hare Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd.) he clarifies
“We only regard the candidate’s abilities when hiring. We have 3 units in Mumbai with 1000 workers. Out of which 71 are Muslims. The issue created was due to the senseless statement of a new recruiter in the H.R. Department. If we’re doing business at an international level then it’s obvious that we can’t work with this kind of mentality.”
Zeshan also received an apology a day later from Mahendra S. Deshmukh, Associate VP & Head- HR saying “We would like to clarify that the company does not discriminate against candidates based on gender, caste, religion, etc. Any hurt caused in the matter is deeply regretted.”
Far from being a case of discrimination, as the sensationalist social media would have you believe, this is just another error made by just another fresher in training. It is a request from us to please fact check anything before you post. You do have freedom of speech, say what you want but do not spread lies, or worse, half truths. Lies can only do harm to yourself and to the people in the community.
