While most of us were asleep last night, Viacom18 dropped trailer of their upcoming biopic drama Manto featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film revolves around Indo-Pakistan Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto, which is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film written and directed by Nandita Das is set in post Independence era.
Manto, a well-established writer works as a scriptwriter in Bombay film industry. Manto has many admirers and friends in the industry, including aspiring actor Shyam and and popular actor, director and producer Ashok Kumar. But his biggest strength is his wife Safia.
Soon after Independence in August 1947, new country Pakistan is born. Safia goes to Lahore to attend sister’s wedding, to return soon after. Amidst increasing Hindu Muslim tensions in India, Manto decides to stay in Bombay. One day, Shyam, on hearing that his family was forced to flee Pakistan because of a Muslim mob attack, tells Manto in anger, “I could have even killed you.” Shocked by this, Manto suddenly becomes conscious of his religious identity and decides to move to Pakistan.
